Research programme
Research that ships as architecture
Synthmind Systems runs its research inside the product it studies. Three active directions, each grounded in published science and each answerable in the running estate.
Machine communication
Glyph-native language for small models
Between machines, English is a terrible wire format: expensive, ambiguous and impossible to validate mechanically. CIRO's organs already speak a typed binary protocol, so the project can ask a sharper question than most: can a small model read and emit a fixed glyph vocabulary as its native machine-to-machine channel?
A glyph stream translates losslessly into the wire protocol and back, so every machine conversation stays mechanically typed and mechanically measurable, while natural language is reserved for the human-facing surface where it belongs.
The thesis chapter
Anatomy of a Synthetic Mind
Developed with the Open University, this chapter tests whether a literature-grounded model of mind can be mapped, function by function, onto a running estate, and whether the mapping pays engineering rent.
The discipline is correspondence analysis: every function anchored in cited cognitive science, every claim traceable to the live system, and every analogy required to generate at least one checkable design decision. An analogy that cannot be tested is cut.
Memory research
A homeostatic memory architecture
Most AI memory is a pile that grows. CIRO's memory doctrine treats memory as physiology: constitutive tiers, consolidation as an active cycle, and a system that can feel and report its own depletion before performance collapses.
The raw record is append-only and human-readable by design, so the estate preserves a complete, reviewable history of what it knew, when it learned it, and when its mind changed.
How we publish
The project's external journal is the master public record: written for funder reviewers, technical due diligence and the Open University at once. It states plainly what is running, what is designed and what is deferred, because a research claim you cannot inspect is marketing, and we do not ship marketing as science. Reviewers can request the journal through the contact page.
